Mac having time for a break during the work day was a very rare occurrence. If it wasn’t for his fellow coworkers always telling him that he needed to take it easy every now and then, Mac probably would have eventually worked himself to death. But that’s just the way he was: determined, ambitious, a hard worker.
He was allowing himself a fifteen minute break. Mac wanted to go to the break room for nothing more than a cup of coffee. The case he was working on was too gruesome and serious for any more time off than Mac was allowing himself right now. It was the murder of a prostitute but there was a catch to it: her sexual organs had been removed, leading everyone to immediately think of the Jack the Ripper murders in White Chapel, England over 120 years ago. Did they have some kind of sick copycat on their hands? Mac hoped not. They had to solve this case before the murderer struck again.
Mac stepped into the break room and headed over to the coffee pot. Thankfully, it was full so he wouldn’t have to waste time making some more. He took a Styrofoam cup and poured the dark brown liquid into it until it was half way full. He added a little bit of creamer and a spoonful of sugar. Sitting down at one of the tables, he set his cup down and picked up the newspaper that was on top of the table. They had asked the news reporters to keep the details of the murder out of the paper, and it looked like they had done just that.

Don just arrived at the crime lab. He had to see Mac as soon as possible. First he went to Mac's office, but Danny told him that Mac was taking a very much needed coffee break. "The 'Jack the ripper' murders? Don asked. Danny just nodded his head yes. Don knew that this wasn't a good time to tell his boss that he had misplaced his shield. He knew that Mac needed all the detectives that he could get on the current case.
Don entered the break room. "Hey Mac. How's it going? You haven't seen a shield laying around somewhere, have you? I took a bus to work today. Car is in the shop and when I got to the squad room, it was gone. I know you need all of the detectives that you can get on the case. A woman bumped into me on the bus. She must have snatched my shield." Don looked apologeticly at his boss.

Mac was just finishing up reading the short article in the newspaper on the prostitute’s murder when Flack came walking in. He carefully folded the paper back up as he listened to him speak. This wasn’t what Mac needed right now. Flack was inarguably their best detective. Today he had wanted all of his best devoted to this case, and now it looked like that wasn’t going to happen because someone had misplaced their shield or (more worse than misplacing) it had been stolen from him.
But everyone had been under a lot of stress these past twenty-four hours because of the case. The last thing Mac wanted to do was to make that stress any worse than it already was. Then again, he couldn’t not say anything. “Don, how long have you been working for me? You should know that if you’re going to be on a crowded bus or subway that you should keep your shield in sight at all times.” That was common sense.

Don looked down at the floor as he heard what Mac was saying to him. Don knew that Mac was right. It was no excuse for an officer to ever lose his shield. " I'm sorry, Mac." Don knew that the sorry wasn't enough, but maybe it was a start. " I've been working for you almost 4 years now." Wow, Don hadn't realized that he had been a detective that long.
"Mac, is there some way that you can push the paperwork through faster for a replacement shield? I know you need every man out on the street right now. And I won't be much good to you sitting behind a desk." Don looked at Mac with his well known puppy dog eyes.

In some situations sorry just didn’t cut it. Once again, though, Mac was going to have to take it easy on Flack. The crime lab had been very hectic for the past day. Mac couldn’t even begin to imagine what the NYPD station had been like. People had probably been calling in every minute with tips, and most of those tips had most likely turned out to be nothing. By law, though, they had to investigate every single one of them.
On any other day Mac wouldn’t have granted the favor Flack had asked of him but this was far from any other day. He rolled his eyes a little bit at Flack’s puppy dog eyes. Why more women didn’t swoon over that look Mac would never know. “I’ll do what I can, Don.” Mac made a mental note to do it as soon as he was done in here.
He picked up his cup from the table and took a small sip of his coffee. “Take a seat,” he told Flack, motioning towards the empty chair across from him. “Try to enjoy the only free time you’re going to have for a very long time.” Not only was that a reference to the case they were working on but, as part of Flack’s punishment for being so careless, Mac was going to see to it that Flack was kept busy for a long time to come.

Don grinned when he saw Mac roll his eyes. He knew that the chief detective was in a fairly good mood. At least Mac wasn't yelling at him. And he was grateful for that. "Thank you, boss." Don knew that Mac didn't like to be called boss. It was Flack's way of letting the senior detective know that he understood. Don always smiled when his puppy dog eyes worked. He only hoped that they would work as well with detective Angell. Don had secretly amired her from afar. He hoped that would change soon.
Don took a seat as Mac had asked him toafter he ppoured himself a cup of hot coffee. Don knew that he would most likely be working around the clock for awhile. So much for his social life. "Will do. Mac, you want me to man the desk, while you take care of things? That would free a guy up for more important things. It's the very least that I can do to help . "

Nuala stepped out into the crime lab for the first time since her bereavement leave. Of course, she came back two weeks early, but that was just who she was. Taking a deep breath, she started to feel overwhelmed by all the activity going on around her. Looking around, she knew that if she didn't do this now, she'd never get back into the swing of things.
Pushing her bangs behind her ear, she quickly moved to the break room, just wanting to get away for a couple of moments to catch her bearings. Walking in, she noticed Mac and Don sitting at a table. "Oh, I didn't realize anyone would be in here." She said, moving to the counter for some much needed coffee.

Don heard someone walk into the break room. "It's alright. Mac and I were just about finished here. " Don turned back to Mac. "Thanks, Mac. I owe you one or two. I will start on that new assignment as soon as you give me the go ahead. " Don meant the desk duty but he didn't want Nuala To know about it yet. She and all th others would know about it soon enough. They had always had a friendly rival. And she would never let Flack live this down.

Why did Mac get the distinct impression that Flack was trying to suck up to him right now? He was offering to do work that no detective in their right mind would ever want to do. But that wasn’t going to make Mac lessen Flack’s punishment.
Before he could respond to Flack, Nuala had stepped into the break room. Mac didn’t know her that well but he knew what had happened to her fiancé, and he knew that she was up there with Flack being a great homicide detective. “You owe me more than two,” he said, chuckling so Flack knew that he wasn’t serious about it…or was he? With Mac you could never tell. “The new assignment is all yours,” he finally replied.

"Well, I didn't mean to interrupt anything." Nuala apologized, pouring herself some coffee. Taking a sip, she grimaced. "I see the coffee hasn't changed since I was gone." She mumbled, shaking her head. Her ears perked up at the talk of a new assignment.
"New case?" She raised an eyebrow inquisitively. She tried to sneak a peak over Flack's shoulder, but she couldn't see anything. "I need something to sink my teeth into, get back to work and get my mind off other things."

Don grinned. "Thanks boss. I'll be sure to do a great job for you too." Don knew that it always got to Mac when anyone ever called him boss. It was Don's way of teasing his good friend and colleague.
Don turned to Nuala. "Good to see you back, Nuala. We missed you. If there is anything that I can do. Just let me know. Oh, as far as the assignment thatMac gave me. It's a one person job. and I don't think that you would really like it. "
Don turned back to Mac. " Getting right on it, Mac." "Don't let it get around too fast, Naula, but I'm going to be working desk for awhile. " Don knew that this would be the beginning of never ending teasing by his fellow detectives. But he could handle it.

Flack was going to get his just punishment and plenty of teasing from Mac in the days to come. All of that teasing was going to have to wait, though, until they solved this Jack the Ripper case, and Mac was going to make sure that everyone stayed focused on it. There was going to be no messing around.
“Don’t work too hard, Don,” Mac said, giving him a knowing smile. Mac knew that he would be working really hard. Not that the job was all that hard. It was the people who called in who made it hard. There was nothing like dealing with the New York attitude all day long.

Nuala nodded when Flack mentioned that it was a personal assignment. "Well aren't we Mr.Lucky." She chuckled, taking another sip of her coffee.
"Is there anything I should be aware of? Cases that are top priority?" She inquired, needing to focus on something. If there were any cases she needed to catch up on, she'd give herself today to catch up and learn everything she needed to know.
